Safe Search For Christian Sexual Addiction

There are many ways to keep from stumbling across porn on the Internet. One of the most popular ways is using an Internet filter. I have also found another way to add an extra level of purity protection to your computer. It is called “Safe Search”.

I have built a Google web search that has the family friendly settings turned all the way up. When searching this will filter out questionable sites and ones with adult content.

Here are some of the reasons why I recommend “Safe Search”

* It keeps kids safe from clicking on a site that may be questionable or have adult content.

* Many time porn sites will target key words that have little or nothing to do with their site. They do this to get the description in front of you, which they hope will suck you in. This is also a reason that sometimes people fall with regards to a Christian sexual addiction.

* Search engines (yahoo, aol, etc…) can and do have questionable graphics on their site, such as personal ads, women in bathing suits, etc. You can eliminate these potential lust triggers with “Safe Search”. When struggling against porn you want to eliminate as many temptations and triggers as possible.

* Feel better about your family using the Internet when you not around.

Why I recommend setting “Safe Search” as your home page

*Most people use the Internet to do a search for something. If your homepage is set to “Safe Search” it will come up when you open your Internet. People will use the most convenient tool available to them and in this case it will be “Safe Search”.

* You can be an example to your kids. If they see Mom and Dad using “Safe Search”, they will most likely want to search from the “Safe Search” site.

* You can instill in them a healthy practice they can use the rest of their lives.

* You can also influence friends and relatives who see you using “Safe Search”. You never know who is watching you.

Note: The “Safe Search” web site is not connected with my site. I understand that many people who come to my site with discretion. By setting your homepage to the “Safe Search” nobody will assume that you found out about it through Cure To Be Pure. There are many people who have a Christian sexual addiction (not that you have one) and I know that they don't want the whole world to know just people the pick to trust. Another note things get a whole lot easier once you start talking to people about any issues you may have.

You Tube Purity For Christian Sexual Addiction

First and foremost, if you go to “You Tube” and find yourself seeking out porn and acting on some sort of Christian sexual addiction, then cut yourself off from it immediately. If you use “You Tube” for other reasons then my following suggestion will add an extra layer of purity security.

Have you ever been surfing through “You Tube” looking for interesting videos, then out of the blue on the right hand side of your screen are videos with porn on them and all you have to do is click to watch? The trouble with “You Tube” is that many times Internet filters can’t recognize them as porn and consequently they don’t get blocked. It is very easy to lose your way in the maze of “You Tube.” That is why you need an additional layer of Purity Security against Christian sexual addiction and pornography addiction.

First, create a generic “You Tube” account with a generic user name like John Smith or Julie Jones. Second, when you come the section about putting in your age, put in an age that is less than 18 years old. Third, complete your new account creation by filling in the rest of the fields.

The beauty of this idea is that when you surf “You Tube” it won’t let you watch videos that have been flagged for adult content. Another interesting feature is that if you use the same computer (like your home computer) to go to “You Tube,” it will keep you logged in for days. If you ever find yourself logged out, just log back in and your back in business.

This is not a foolproof plan, but it sure does help a lot on your battle against Christian sexual addiction.

The Quick Version

Hello, I’m a Deacon at my local church. My name is Phil, so I guess my name is Deacon Phil. I’m responsible of driving the church van downtown to pickup homeless people for church on Sunday. I drive the van a large amount of the time, but recently other brothers have stepped forward to lend a hand.

I also run a college age ministry with my wife, which has truly been a blessing in our lives. The young adults in our group have been one of the highlights of our year.

I have been in the U.S. Armed Forces for 8 years and was just recently released from active duty with an honorable discharge. I’m now free to chase my dream of getting a bachelors degree. I’ve been enrolled in my local college fulltime since January 2nd, 2007.

The Long Version (My Life Story)

I was raised in a Christian home all my life, but after I graduated high school I moved out on my own and started to backslide. I then joined the military and continued to backslide for a number of years. I became very depressed, sexually active, and started smoking, but I was still going to church every Sunday. Church was the only place that made me feel any better about myself, especially when I would sing hymns. My life was so miserable that the only place I had left to turn to was Jesus. I had nothing and nobody else.

I still remember the conversation I had with God one night. It went something like this: “God I’ve tried to be a Christian my whole life, and I can’t do it. If you made the trees, sky, grass, and mountains then you can make me a Christian, because I can’t do it.” After that I had evil dreams every night until the next Sunday. I went to a non-denominational church that Sunday and when the Pastor had an alter call I went down and just started crying, which I couldn’t stop or control for quite awhile. It felt wonderful!

I was 22 years old at that point and finally happy. Through God I was able to quit my 7-year smoking addiction. A few months later a man in my church stepped forward and told his story of how he was addicted to porn for 20 years and how God had worked in his life to break his addiction. He went on to report that he facilitated a group that dealt with this type of addiction. I joined his incredible group, and it later turned into a 12-step Christian based recovery program.

I stuck with the program for a year and a half dealing with my own lust, but then I was transferred in the military. I thought I had lust tamed, but with the stress of a new duty station, and needing to build my routine and social life all over again, I unfortunately backslid into lust.

I’ve done a lot of growing since that time. I’m 29 years old now and have battled with lust since I was 22. The battles I’ve fought in this area have been grueling, but by implementing the tools I learned in my 12-step program I have healed immensely. My battles today aren’t even close to what they used to be. I’m winning the war! Do I still have temptation and mess up? Sure I do, but those mess-ups are now few and far between.

My journey has been long and hard, but worth every minute. I can’t quite describe to you what it feels like to have a flood of thoughts and be able to take them captive. Or, when I was single, what it feels like to be offered sex by a beautiful girl and tell her I’m not interested. There is no other feeling quite like going to bed at the end of the day with a clean mind and a clear conscience.

When I was in the military I had a Chaplin who was my Bible study partner. We were discussing a particular struggle that I was able to encourage him about. In a later conversation with my Chaplin he mentioned how great it felt to be in this struggle with another Christian, fighting the enemy together. He talked about how the uphill path to victory seemed so muddy to him and when he took one step forward, he slipped 2 steps back. However, he said battling with another Christian, pushing him, and fighting with him was just what he needed. He said it was not only encouraging, but also inspiring to see somebody willing to go through the same battles he was.

This is one of the reasons I created this website, because I never had anything like it when I was battling through. I want to be that Christian who is fighting with you. Telling you not to give up. Remember, no matter how hard it seems God will be with you all the way. Purity is becoming a reality in my life and I trust God that it will become one in yours too.

Recovery Groups In Your Area

Many people have found that it is tough to be a lone ranger in the battle against porn and lust. Some well intended Christians advise to use the resources in your local church, but the typical church doesn’t talk about porn, sex, masturbation, and lust very often. When they do, it’s usually vague and tends to leave you questioning whether you’re the only one dealing with lustful temptations.

This is why recovery groups were most likely created. I can’t tell you the history of recovery groups, but what I can tell you is how relieving it feels to share your struggles with someone else. Most recovery groups turn into a sort of family where everyone supports each other. If you find yourself continually losing the battle, please get involved in a recovery group. In the battle for purity a recovery group lets you fight as an army rather than one solitary solider.

Celebrate Recovery

Celebrate Recovery was created by John Baker of the Saddleback Church (yes, this is Rick Warren’s church). I’m aware of the debate regarding the Purpose Driven Life book, but if you have an unenthusiastic view of Rich Warren or his book please don’t tune me out just yet.

John Baker founded Celebrate Recovery after he was discouraged in his Alcoholics Anonymous 12 step program. In his testimony or welcome video he explains that after trying to talk about Jesus Christ as his higher power, he was ridiculed. Consequently, he set out to make a group that used many of the same 12 step principles, but tailored it specifically for Christians who are struggling.

There are 8 main principles in his recovery group, which spell the acronym RECOVERY. I will give you the summarized version.

R = Realize I’m not God (You have a problem and need help)
E = Earnestly believe God exists (God will help you with your problem)
C = Consciously choose (turn your life and problem over to God)
O = Openly confess (confess faults to God, yourself, and someone you trust)
V = Voluntarily submit (ask God to change you)
E = Evaluate relationships (forgive others and ask for forgiveness)
R = Reserve a quite time (develop a daily time with God to improve your relationship)
Y = Yield yourself to God (share this good news with others)

With recovery groups all over the world, they tend to be located closer to major cities. It is kind of difficult to use their search engine to locate a group. So instead I have found the recovery groups for San Francisco. All you need to do is replace San Francisco with your city and hit search. You will then be presented with the leaders name, phone number, hosting church and time they get together.

When you do call let them know you Sexual Addiction Men’s Group (or SA for men) or if your looking for women’s group let them know you want the Sexual Addiction Women’s Group (or SA for women). They also have groups on anger, food addiction, chemical dependency, and financial recovery.

Also there is a message from Pastor Rick Warren explaining why the 8 step program was created and what you are truly signing up for.

I should also mention that Celebrate Recovery has a one-day seminar. Currently they only have it in two locations, Idaho and New York.

If you have the desire to begin your own recovery group, a church of any size can implement these materials. All the materials can be bought at their website. They have student and teacher edition recovery guides, and everything else you can think of. If you are looking for support organizing a recovery group, Celebrate Recovery has 5 blogs to assist you. They are on the home page about half way down (in the blue box).

By searching the site I have found a jail ministry with the 8 step program. I haven’t had the privilege of being involved in a jail ministry, but this is a fantastic opportunity for them as well. You will have to email Celebrate Recovery for more information on this.

Purity Forums (Help is just a click away, thank you Jesus for Forums)

The influence of forums is always incredible to me. These ones that are listed here I would consider the top three. All of these are primary for men but also have topics for just women to post and so men can understand what is going on. Except XXXchuch everybody posts there.

There is an awesome web forum (men only) at the Every Mans Battle website. These brothers can pray for you and give you the support you need. It is wonderful active with people who care and will post replies to calls for encouragement and advice. You will have to register (which is free) and after that you can start posting.

I have always loved this next forum; it is for men and women. Actually it is pretty much for anybody struggling with sexual sin. You can find accountability partners here, but be sure to ask for someone who is living sexually pure. Everybody seems to come here to ask questions and get support so you have to be specific.

XXXChurch (Prayer Wall)

I am amazed at this next forum. It is also for men and women. They have every topic that one could ask for. Here is a quick list: man’s battle, young mans battle, single man’s battle, man’s marriage, preparing your son and every heart restored (this one is for women). I think they hit all the people who are dealing with sexual purity on this one, God Bless you guys.

Love, Hope and Encourgement for Women Who Are Effected by Husband/Boyfriend's Sexual Sin

First I would like to say God bless you and Jesus loves you so much. It is crazy to think that something could cause so much pain and confusion, that you had nothing to do with. And believe me 99.999999 percent of the time it is not your fault. I would actually be hard pressed to find any instance where the women had anything to do with the man’s sexual sin. So if you are feeling like you are responsible for any part of his sin, it is safe to say you are not. This is something that is between him and God.

The first resources that I would recommend is at Pure on Line. This has a great info page with a video by Renee Crosse who's husband admitted to her he had a problem with looking at porn. The video is powerful and honest and gives a very real idea of what it takes for a women to be supportive.

Prayer, Encouagement and Support Forums

Next in my personal opinion the thing that you need right now is encouragement, prayer and support from other women who have been through this and understand where you are coming from. For this reason I am listing a couple of forums (sites you can post your story or questions and get support) that are dedicated to women who have men who are committing sexual sin or have commited it in the past. Here are the links:

Christian Wives of Addicts (A wonderful forum dedicated primarily to wives who have husbands addicted to porn. You will find encouragement and wonderful people here to pray for you)

Partners for Purity (This forum is just as good as the first, with other good resources on their site)

Every Womens Battle (I have to give it to this forum, the topics you can pick from are amazing. From married women to single women to young women. You will be able to find support here)

Every Heart Restored (This is a wonderful forum dedicated to the issues that women go through. The link takes you to a page that you have to register at, sorry you are not able to get in unless you register)

My suggestion is to all three of these together. It is good to get as much support as possible during this painful time. If you do all three you will get so many more people praying for you and encouraging you than just using one.

Online support Groups

If you want something more in depth I would recommend New Life Partners. This is primary an online group of women who meet to give each other strength an encouragement (using email, online chat, instant messaging, Bible and book study and annual retreats). This is better than explaining to someone who doesn’t understand what your going through at all and then trying to get support from them. To see what this program is all about here is the link

Phone Counseling

There is also a third resource at Pure Life Ministries. This is a phone counseling for you or you and your husband/boyfriend. All the counselors have been through similar experiences that you have and have been trained at Pure Life Ministries. There is a cost associated with this ($25.00 per 30 min) but having a dedicated counselor might just be the think needed. Here is the link

Every Heart Restored (Recommended Reading)

A wonderful recommended book for wives with husbands who have an admitted problem with porn or other sexual sin. This is not a good book to get techniques to confront your husband. If you do want to understand what is going on with your husband and start the healing process this would be the book to do it. Last time I checked they had used copies at half the price of what the book cost new.

If you are looking for an ongoing radio show dealing with questions and answers about sexual purity, then here you go. It seems no matter how many books you read it is always good to hear a good Christian’s voice talking and explaining things.

The first one is at Pure Sex Radio. These broadcasts are about short (15 to 30 min long) and they have about 52 of them and counting. They are all in MP3 format to download and they are free. Also if you want to buy a regular CD you can at this site and they will mail it out to you. I prefer free, but whatever gives you the encouragement you need I’m all for it. These have topics for everybody, explaining how sexual sin affects everybody and what you can do about it. Here is the link:

The second resource for purity radio is at Blazing Grace’s website. The hosts of this show are Jayson Graves and Mike Genung and they do a great job. There are many articles on the internet about dealing with Christian sexual addiction or sexual sin. I won’t think for a moment that my list is comprehensive. But I will give you the resources that I have found.

The first one I will list has got to be the absolute best for sexual purity articles. It is located at Every Mans Battle website and all I can say is WOW!! You could literally spend hours here and it would be time well spent. These well written articles range from addiction to rebuilding trust in your marriage and on to giving you tools for temptation. What I have found so far is two daily devotion websites dedicated to battling all types of sexual addiction. The first one I will list has all its devotions based on scripture. This is a wonderful benefit because you can have scripture to take along in your journey to fight the enemy. The link is at

The second website I found does a good job but doesn’t go in depth as much as the first one. If you are in a hurry or real busy (it is a 3 min devotion) this one is great. A personal note on devotions is you only get out what you put in. If you do have a sexual sin you are fighting and tell yourself I will read these everyday and I’ll be fine, you will be missing the point of these. Devotions are a wonderful time to connect with God. It is a time to lay down the things you have to do for the day and be able to just focus on Him. This can also work if you only have 3 min. The time isn’t important, what is important is if you are come to the devotion prepared to learn and grow from it.
